If you already have an E-ZPass tag from another E-ZPass agency (for example I-PASS), please be sure to remove that tag from your vehicle if you are using one of our Minnesota tags (E-ZPass or MnPASS), or if you are carpooling and the tag doesn’t have the option to switch it into HOV mode. In Minnesota, single occupant vehicles pay a fee only during peak commuting hours. The rules for using E-ZPass vary depending on where and when you travel. Once the new tag is assigned to your account, it may take up to 48 hours for it to be active out-of-state plan accordingly. If you do plan on traveling outside of Minnesota, contact customer service to trade your MnPASS tag for a new E-ZPass tag. There is no need to trade your old tag for a new E-ZPass tag unless you plan on traveling outside of Minnesota. The old MnPASS switchable and sticker tags will continue to work here in Minnesota. MnDOT is actively seeking funding for subsequent phases of the project which extend the E-ZPass lanes to Hwy 77 near the airport. The E-ZPass lanes between Hwy 100 and I-35W are anticipated to open in fall 2026. This multi-phase project brings other safety improvements along this busy Twin Cities interstate including a new ramp at the I-35W and I-494 interchange, new bridges at Portland Ave., Nicollet Ave., and 12th Ave., and the addition of a new pedestrian bridge at Chicago Ave. A four-year construction project on I-494 in Edina, Bloomington and Richfield includes adding new E-ZPass lanes between Hwy 100 and I-35W.
